Parvati Swayamvara: A Tale of Love and Longing

Parvati was the daughter of Himavan, the king of the mountains, and Mena, an apsara. One day, when she was 8 years old, Himavan took her to see Shiva. Parvati was very spiritual and curious to know about God. She was excited to see Shiva, but he was meditating and ignored her. Parvati would visit him every day and offer him fresh flowers, hoping that he would open his eyes and talk to her. She had already decided that he was the man she wanted to wed.

Many years passed, and Parvati was now a beautiful young woman. Still, Shiva remained deep in meditation. One day, Parvati told her father, “I want to marry Lord Shiva. But he is always meditating. I wish that I could also meditate like Shiva!”

Himavan felt sad that Shiva was ignoring his beautiful daughter, who loved him deeply. He decided to take matters into his own hands and asked Kama, the God of love, to disturb Shiva's meditation. Madana had a bow and some flower-tipped arrows. He would shoot these arrows at people to stir feelings of love in their hearts.

Kama sent his arrows toward Shiva. Disturbed in his trance, Shiva opened his third eye and caught sight of Kama standing with his bow in his hands. Shiva burned Kama to ashes instantly.

Parvati had been standing nearby with a garland in her hands, but Shiva did not even look at her. He closed his eyes and resumed his meditation.

On seeing this, Parvati's parents were furious. They felt that Shiva had insulted their daughter and told Parvati to stop wasting her time on him. But Parvati refused to budge. “I am going to remain here only,” she said firmly. “And I will eat only wet leaves.” Parvati's parents had no choice but to return home without her.

For many years, Parvati stayed close to Shiva, eating only wet leaves. Then, she began eating only dry leaves. After some more years, she stopped eating leaves altogether. Then she got the name Aparna, meaning “one who does not eat even a leaf.” Parvati became Goddess Aparna because of her rigorous tapasya, or spiritual discipline.

Time passed. Now, Parvati stopped drinking water. She was living only on air and had become very weak. Himavan was worried, as he feared that she would die. Finally, he went to Shiva and said, “Don’t you see what you are doing to my dear daughter? All her life, she wanted only one thing – to marry you. But you did not even look at her. If you won’t marry her, look at her at least. Or she will die.”

However, Shiva wanted to test her one last time before marrying her. Parvati had endured so much for him, and yet Shiva wished to test her love. Taking the form of an ordinary man, he approached her and said, “You are such a lovely girl,” he said. “Why do you want to waste your time here? I know that you wish to marry Shiva, but what kind of man is he? He is always in the cremation ground with ghouls and ghosts. He wears a garland of skulls around his neck, too. How can you marry someone who looks so frightful? Forget him and marry a normal man, someone like me.”

Parvati became angry. “Leave me alone!” she hissed. “I know who Shiva is. Don’t try to sway me with your words. I will never marry you! I will marry only my Shiva. Go away this instant, or I shall curse you!”

On hearing her impassioned words, Shiva assumed his true form. Parvati was awe-struck to see him standing before her. Shiva told her to ask for any boon, and Parvati replied, “Do you not know by now what boon I want? I want to marry you.”

And Shiva, the Compassionate One, known to grant boons easily, readily agreed. Parvati had won his heart with her unwavering love and devotion. The privations she had put herself through for his love melted Shiva’s heart, which had become cold and stony after his first wife, Sati, died.

After they were married, Parvati discovered that she was actually Sati’s reincarnation.
