Shri Subramanya Ashtakam lyrics in English
Lord Subramanya
Subramanya or Muruga is a popular and widely worshipped God. He is the divine son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi and is also known in other names such as Skanda, Karthikeya, Shanmukha, or Swaminatha. The young and handsome Subramanya is a unique God, who combines the rare qualities of matchless valor and supreme intelligence, along with youthful vigor and ageless wisdom. He is also known as the Tamil God and is revered not only in Tamil Nadu but also by the Tamils all over the world.
Legend of Subramanya
According to legends, Muruga incarnated with the specific purpose of ridding the world of evil represented by the demonic forces led by Surapadma. He was born from the 6 sparks of fire that Shiva released from his third eye, which transformed into 6 babies and were then united by Parvati into a single entity, Muruga. That is why Muruga is often portrayed with 6 heads and 12 hands and referred to as Shanmukha, the 6-faced God.
Armed with the mighty Vel, the divine lance bestowed by Parvati, Muruga led the army of Devas, the celestials, fought a heroic battle against Asuras, the demons, for 6 days, and vanquished them. This 6th Day of Muruga's ultimate victory is celebrated as Skanda Shasti with religious fervor. Hence, Muruga is also regarded as a Warrior God.
Besides, Vedic Astrology regards Muruga as the ruler of the fiery and potent, red planet Mars.
It is believed that Muruga worship can annihilate karmic bonds, cure diseases, protect against negativity, mitigate the adverse effects of the malefic planet Mars, and bestow confidence, courage, intelligence, skills, wisdom, and progeny blessings.
Muruga has 2 consorts, Deivanai and Valli, with a peacock as his mount and a rooster as his flag.
Shri Subramanya Ashtakam
Shri Subramanya Ashtakam is a devotional poem composed by the great saint philosopher Adi Shankara in praise of Subramanya. An 'Ashtakam' is an octet consisting of 8 verses. Also called Swaminatha Karavalambam, this is a powerful prayer that can earn the grace of Muruga and help relieve the present and past sins.
Each of the 8 stanzas ends with 'Valleesa Nadha Mama Dehi Karavalambham,' seeking Muruga's hand of protection and support for saving the devotees.
