    The Story behind Guru Purnima

It is said that on the day of Guru Purnima, Shiva, in the form of Adi Guru, transferred his knowledge to the seven sages or Saptarishis, who were the seers of the Vedas. In the Yoga Sutras, God as Pranava or Om is called the Adi Guru of Yoga. Also, the Buddha delivered his first sermon at Sarnath on this day.

According to Jain mythology, Mahavira, one of the most famous Tirthankaras in Jainism, became a Guru officially on this day as he got his first follower. Since then, Jains have celebrated Guru Purnima in honor of Mahavira and all the other gurus who came after him.

    Importance of Celebrating Guru Purnima

Guru Purnima is an occasion to honor teachers who remove the darkness of ignorance from our minds. Since ancient times, the Guru has had a major role to play in the lives of people. The holy books of Hinduism speak of the importance of Gurus and extol the special bond between a Guru and his disciple. There is a saying in Sanskrit that declares that the first place is reserved for the mother, the second for the father, the third for the Guru, and the next for God. Thus, teachers were seen to occupy a higher position than even the Gods in Hindu culture.

‘Gu’ is a Sanskrit word that means ‘ignorance’ or ‘darkness’. ‘Ru’ denotes the one who removes this darkness. This reveals the importance of the Guru in our lives. For this reason, this day is completely dedicated to academic and spiritual teachers.

Guru Purnima marks the beginning of Chaturmas (four months) of the year. During this period, the awakened Guru and spiritual master would hold Vedantic discussions.

    Rituals of Guru Purnima

∙ People celebrate Guru Purnima by worshipping and expressing gratitude to Gurus or teachers. Disciples offer prayers in monasteries and ashrams to their teachers. They also pledge to follow the Guru’s doctrine and teachings and practice them in life.

∙ If the Guru is not alive, one can use a photograph or portrait for the worship. Mantras are also recited to honor his/her memory.

∙  Guru Purnima Pooja and Yajna are done at home or in temples to invoke the Guru’s blessings. Some also observe a fast and practice Yogic Sadhana and meditate.

∙ Buddhists worship Buddha in his temples. They perform the “Uposatha” ritual and listen to Buddha’s 8 teachings. This is an ideal day for monks to begin their meditation and ascetic practice.

∙ Vishnu worship is also associated with Guru Purnima. On this day, people chant Vishnu Sahasranama, or the thousand names of Vishnu. On this auspicious day, one should be in harmony with oneself and channel one’s energy.

      Pooja Vidhi

Arise early and perform your daily tasks like bathing, Pooja, etc. Wear clean clothes.

Place some flowers and a fragrant garland on Sage Vyasa’s portrait. After this, you can get blessings from your own Guru.

Ask your Guru to sit on a chair and present him with a garland.

Offer garments, fruits, flowers, a garland, and Dakshina (money) to your Guru, and accept their blessings.

      Guru Purnima and Jupiter

As per Vedic astrology, you may have a good and healthy life if Jupiter is strong in your birth chart. Jupiter is also called Guru in astrology. He is the Guru of the Gods.

Doing the above rituals can boost the good effects of Jupiter or Guru in your chart. If Jupiter occupies its sign of debilitation – Capricorn – in the horoscope, you must worship Guru Yantra regularly.

Worshipping Guru Yantra can benefit you, even if there is a conjunction of Jupiter-Rahu, Jupiter-Ketu, or Jupiter-Saturn in your chart. If Jupiter is in the debilitated house, i.e. 6th, 8th, or 12th house in the horoscope, worship an energized Guru Yantra.

You can also wear Topaz to avoid the ill effects of Jupiter. However, consult a good astrologer before doing so. Topaz can have a positive effect on your job, wealth, business, children, and health.
