Kubera Mantra: Meaning, Importance, Method, and Benefits

Kubera is the god of wealth and the king of the semi-divine yakshas in Hinduism. [3] He is the regent of the north (Dikpala), and a being who protects the world (Lokapala). He owns the treasures of the world. Kubera is often depicted as having a corpulent body that is adorned with jewels and carrying a money-pot and a club.

In Vedic-era texts, he is described as the chief of evil spirits. But he gained the status of a deva (god) in the Puranas and the Hindu epics. As per the scriptures, Kubera once ruled Lanka but was overthrown by his half-brother Ravana. He later settled in the city of Alaka in the Himalayas. The glory of Kubera's city is described in many scriptures.

Kubera is also part of the Buddhist and Jain pantheons. In Buddhism, he is called Vaisravana and is also equated with Pañcika. In Jainism, he is called Sarvanubhuti.

He is often depicted as a dwarf, with the complexion of lotus leaves and a rotund belly. He has three legs, 8 teeth, one eye, and is adorned with jewels. Sometimes, he is shown riding a man. His deformities (broken teeth, three legs, three heads, and four arms) are described only in the later Puranic texts. Kubera also holds a mace, a pomegranate, or a money bag in his hand. He may carry jewels or have a mongoose with him. In Tibet, the mongoose is seen as Kubera's victory over the Nagas, who are the guardians of treasures.

Kubera is the treasurer of the gods and the overlord of the yakshas, the guhyakas, kinnaras, and gandharvas, who are his assistants. They protect the jewels of the earth and guard his city. Kubera is also the guardian of travelers. He bestows wealth to people who please him.

As the treasurer of the world’s riches, Kubera is worshipped by people. According to a myth, Kubera credited money to the deity Venkateshwara (a form of Vishnu) of Tirupati so that he could marry Padmavati (an avatar of Goddess Lakshmi). To help Vishnu repay his debt, devotees donate money in Venkateshwara's Hundi. For this reason, he is also associated with Lakshmi and is sometimes represented along with her as Kubera Lakshmi. Kubera is also associated with Ganesha.
