Benefits and Importance of the Hayagriva Mantra

Hayagriva is a Lord Vishnu avatar and is worshipped as the God of knowledge and wisdom. He is depicted as a deity seated on a white lotus with a horse head and a human body. Symbolically, it represents the triumph of knowledge and is guided by God to win over the demons of darkness and passion. Lord Hayagreeva is believed to have taken this avatar to get back the Vedas that were stolen by the Demons or Asuras and is hence called the master of Vedas.

The Legend Behind Lord Hayagriva's Incarnation

There are many legends behind the incarnation of Hayagriva. The first is as follows:

Lord Vishnu narrated the Vedas to Lord Brahma and two asuras Kaithabha and Madhu came to know of it, stole and hid it under the ocean. Brahma got worried about the lost sacred text and asked for help from Lord Vishnu. With the intention of bringing back the sacred Vedas and handing them back to Brahma, Vishnu took the avatar of Hayagriva who destroyed the Asuras and got the Vedas.

Another legend about Hayagriva is as follows:

As per Bhagwat Purana, a demon who was a horse-faced human prayed to Goddess Durga who gave him the blessings of immortality but with the condition that another Hayagriva can only kill him. With this new boon, demon Hayagriva wreaked havoc in Devalok (the abode of devas). The devas were not able to withstand the torture and sought Lord Vishnu’s help. But Vishnu was helpless as the boon was given by Supreme Goddess Durga. But still, Vishnu fought a battle with the demon.

After a tiresome war, Vishnu was resting in Pamasana. Brahma had an idea to wake up Visnu. He left termites in Vishnu’s bowstring, which made a sound. But instead of waking Him up, the string snapped and his neck got severed from the body. Brahma then prayed to Goddess Durga and she put the head of a white horse on Vishnu’s body. Thus Vishnu got a Hayagriva avatar and from that day on, Hayagriva Jayanthi was celebrated. Now, with this avatar, he battled the demon who was then defeated. After this, Lord Vishnu returned to his original form. It is said that Hayagriva Jayanthi is the best time to get the blessings of this Divine Avatar. Special poojas are conducted and the beej mantra is recited.

It is believed that Hayagriva is an embodiment of Vidya (education), Jncananandmayam Devam (Speech) and Adharma Sarva Vidyanam (Overcoming ignorance with wisdom).
